Overview

This annual meeting draws over 300 scientists, students, community members, researchers, and interested others. Usually consisting of a combination of panel presentations, a keynote address, poster presentations, and community booths, this day-long conference highlights the HIV/AIDS related research being conducted at Yale University and also by CIRA's collaborating institutions, The Institute for Community Research and the University of Connecticut's Center for Health Intervention and Prevention (CHIP). The conference also highlights collaborative efforts in the surrounding community and provides many opportunities for networking.

This year, AIDS Science Day will focus on the notion that SCIENCE=CHANGE. Though we acknowledge the breakthroughs of 30 years of research, it is clear that more needs to be done to combat HIV/AIDS, particularly in regards to the pandemic's effect in gay and bisexual men and communities of color. Even as we commemorate these achievements, we look forward to new breakthroughs in the fight for survival, and we look to the scientific community to lead the way.

The source of inspiration for our AIDS Science Day poster came from the logo developed by the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT UP) which adopted a pink triangle along with the slogan "SILENCE = DEATH" as its logo shortly after its formation in 1987. A downward-pointing pink triangle was one of the Nazi concentration camp badges used to identify male prisoners who were sent there because of their perceived or actual homosexuality. Originally intended as a badge of shame, the pink triangle (often inverted from its Nazi usage) has been reclaimed as an international symbol of gay pride and the gay rights movement.

Dr. Judith Auerbach Named as Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to welcome San Francisco AIDS Foundation's Dr. Judith Auerbach as keynote speaker. Her bio is below:

Judy Auerbach is responsible for developing, leading, and managing the foundation’s research, research translation, and program evaluation efforts. Before joining the foundation she was vice president of public policy and program development at The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), and headed its office in Washington, D.C. She has held senior leadership positions in the Office of AIDS Research at the U.S. National Institutes of Health and served in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Judy received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and has taught, presented, and published in the areas of HIV/AIDS, social science and public policy, and sex and gender. She is happy to have returned to her native city, San Francisco.
